Phoebe Bridgers shares her thoughts on Metallica

In a new conversation with Rolling Stone, Phoebe Bridgers shared her thoughts on Metallica. In a chat with Metallica’s drummer Lars Ulrich, Phoebe labeled Metallica as a pop band.

“I think of Metallica as being a pop band”

She also added:

“A lot of metal is just metal to be metal — but Metallica write real songs.”

Phoebe Bridgers' love goes so far as to defend 2003's unloved "St. Anger":

“Also, St. Anger is a great record. It might have been the first Metallica album I heard.”

The two also discussed their mutual love for Motörhead:

"It’s a true story. I was on a road trip with my drummer, and we were listening to the radio. They were talking about how Lemmy passed away [in 2015], and I was like, “Lemmy was alive?” I was like, “Oh, my fucking God. It’s crazy that he was alive this whole time.” So he died twice to me. I just sometimes always assume those people who are famous for living hard aren’t around anymore, and it was just a weird mindfuck. We spent the whole road trip screaming along and making playlists. I listen to a lot of Motörhead, a lot of Metallica. I have dabbled in the Slayer world. And then, weirdly late for me, I got super into Nine Inch Nails.”

Lars Ulrich revealed his least favorite Metallica song

In a new interview with Vulture, Lars Ulrich revealed the one Metallica song that he doesn’t really want to listen to again.

In a surprising revelation, Lars admitted that he isn’t the biggest fan of the song released in 1988 - “Eye Of The Beholder”.

When asked about his least favorite Metallica song of all time, Lars Ulrich said the following:

There’s a song called “Eye of the Beholder” on the Justice album. Wherever I hear that song, it sounds kind of like — I guess we don’t want to be super-disrespectful to it — but it sounds really forced. It sounds like you put a square peg in a round hole. It sounds like it’s got two different tempos. There’s kind of a 4/4 feel in the intro and on the verses, and then I think the choruses are more like in a waltz tempo. It literally sounds like two different worlds rubbing up against each other. It sounds very awkward to me. I’m not a huge fan of that song.

Lars continued his analysis of the track from “…And Justice For All”:

I guess the asterisk is that, to me, we did the best we could each moment. So of course, sometimes you sit down and go “Huh?” or “That could have been better” or “That was a little awkward” or “That feels a little silly or easy” or “That feels over-thought-out” or whatever. It goes back to that whole thing about the past is the past, and I don’t spend a long time back there. And there’s not really much I can do about it [laughs] and honestly, I don’t listen to them. I don’t listen to a lot of Metallica music. Part of it is because I’m sort of overly analytical [about the details]. It’s basically almost impossible for me to listen to a Metallica song without going, “Okay, how are the sonics, how’s the mix, how does the guitar sound? The vocals are too loud, the bass is too boomy.” It becomes this exercise in analytics. When you hear your favorite band — like if I listened to Rage Against the Machine or something, I just fucking let myself go. But when Metallica comes on it’s like, “Huh?”

“Eye Of The Beholder” is a fan favorite - from an iconic thrash metal record from the 80’s - so it’s really surprising that it’s Lars least favorite song but hey… each to his own!

Metallica just released their new live album S&M2. The record was recorded on two nights in September last year. It was a celebration of the 20 years of a classic concert that happened with an orchestra in the late nineties. The reunion took place at the Case Center, California. The first time Metallica played with the San Francisco orchestra was in 1999.

In October, Metallica’s "S&M2" was shown in more than 3 thousand theaters worldwide.
