Bardcore: The New Genre That Transforms Your Favorite Songs Into Medieval Music

Meet Bardcore, a new musical genre that transforms rock and pop hits by Linkin Park, Metallica, Nirvana, Radiohead, System Of A Down, Lady Gaga and several others into medieval songs.

Since April, during the coronavirus pandemic, a new music trend has gained momentum on the internet: reinterpretations of contemporary music, in the medieval version. While not completely new, this musical style has gained lots of new followers and relevance during the past few months. The term Bardcore comes from the Celtic word “bard” meaning “poet” or “storyteller”. The genre is also often referred to as Tavernwave.

Wikipedia credits Cornelius Link as the originator of bardcore. Algal the Bard (the musician who performs System Of A Down’s cover above) was also one of the creators of this new trend that been gaining millions of fans on YouTube and social media.

According to The Guardian, on April 20, Cornelius Link uploaded his Bardcore version of the hit Astronomy - the coffin meme song - to YouTube. This cover version done by Cornelius Link, a 27-year-old German web developer, became a meme in itself and has accumulated over 2.9 million views to this day.

Cornelius Link has been one of the most successful musicians doing this new genre and has uploaded several music covers to YouTube. His interpretation of Foster The People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” has accumulated over 4 million views being the most watched video on his channel.

Ever since the trend started to took off, several other musicians have created songs in the same genre and there’s pretty much a track in every genre from pop to rock to electronic dance music available.
