How Guns N’ Roses Was Able to SURVIVE the GRUNGE era
Grunge was a music genre that was literally everywhere during the early 1990s.
Bands like NIRVANA, PEARL JAM, ALICE IN CHAINS and SOUNDGARDEN were being played on the radio and MTV and, while this was happening, a large part of the hard rock bands of the 80s (the so called hair metal bands) were going through a considerable drop in popularity.
However, in a curious way, a hard rock band managed not only to maintain itself, but also increase its success at the time. This band was the GUNS N´ROSES.
TWISTED SISTER guitarist Jay Jay French (a band that was inactive at the time) spoke to Daniel Sarkissian (screenwriter for the documentary "Rock Is Dead?") about his theory to explain the success of the band led by Axl Rose during this difficult period for hard rock.
"The only band that saved themselves was GUNS N 'ROSES. And my theory is that GUNS N' ROSES was not perceived as a joke. They came from Los Angeles, but I think Axl, first of all, had a great voice. Like, they were real junkies, they didn't pretend to be junkies", said the musician.
Jay complemented his statement, highlighting the authenticity of GUNS. "It's all about authenticity, and grunge is about authenticity. People wanted authenticity, the same with grunge. It ended the hair metal nonsense, which is like, 'Hey, man. Let's party. Let's get the girls and drink I think people got tired of it and wanted [something more] authentic ", he concluded.
